Types of Hearing Aids and When You Need one

It is tough to endure hearing loss. It is tougher for people who bear it. For them, hearing loss leads to problems like - learning disability, social stigma, difficulty in understanding and communicating, and slow professional progress.

Factors such as ear disease, infection, cerumen buildup, or heredity, can cause hearing loss. Hearing loss among adults over the age of 30 years is due to the aging process and exposure to loud sounds.

As you age, the health of your ears declines. Their strength to bear loud or irregular noises weakens. The process of declining health is slow, making it difficult for us to determine whether you are suffering from hearing impairment. At this stage, it is tough for you to ascertain whether you need a hearing aid.

How do you know you are suffering from hearing loss?

Here are signs of hearing loss.

    • Unable to listen to others
    • You think others are mumbling
    • Have difficulty in understanding and participating in conversations
    • Turn the volume of the TV or radio louder than required
    • Have trouble hearing and talking on the telephone
    • Asking others to repeat what they said
    • Getting impatient and irritable during social interactions
    • Avoid social or public events

Do you need a hearing aid?

Yes, if you experience any of the above signs of hearing loss, it is time to book an appointment with an audiologist. An audiologist is a hearing care professional who will perform an in-person hearing test. This test is also known as an audiogram. An audiogram helps in deciding what kind of hearing loss you are having and which hearing aid is right for you.

Types of hearing aids.

There are three types of hearing aids, namely Behind-the-Ear (BTE), In-the-Ear (ITE), and In-the-Canal (ITC).

Behind-the-Ear
A behind-the-ear hearing aid is a hard plastic case worn behind the ear and is attached to an earmold that fits in the outer ear. In the BTE, sound travels from the hearing aid through the earmold and then into the ear. This hearing aid is useful for all ages. Beneficial for people suffering from mild to severe hearing loss.

In-the-Ear
This hearing aid fits perfectly inside the outer ear. Similar to BTE, ITE is useful for mild to severe hearing loss. ITE has a feature of a telecoil. It is a small magnetic coil that allows the user to receive sound through a circuit in the aid, making it easy to hear talks on the phone.

Canal
This hearing aid fits into the ear canal. Available in two forms - In-the-Canal (ITC) and Completely-in-Canal (CIC). The first one is custom made according to the size and shape of the user's ear. CIC hearing aid hides in the user's ear canal. Both variants are useful for mild to severe hearing loss.
